These neighborhoods are proving that it pays to live by the water

Head northeast out of Center City and you will find yourself in the River Wards. The neighborhoods we will be covering today that hug the Delaware River are Northern Liberties, Fishtown, Port Richmond, and Bridesburg. Each bring a unique offering to Philadelphia, as well as diverse real estate.

Before we dig into the infographic on these fine neighborhoods, let’s take a moment to learn a little more about each one.

Neighborhood Facts, Destinations, and Trivia

The title was, “Northern Liberties: From World’s Workshop to Hipster Mecca and the People in Between” if that gives you an idea of what was on display.
  • Residents of the area have a lot at their fingertips: The Piazza at Schmidts, North Bowl, Silk City – just to name a few. It’s regarded as one of the best neighborhoods for eating.

Port Richmond

  • This neighborhood has been inhibited for a looooong time, as in more than 5,000 years. It was one of the primary communities for Native Americans dating back to 3500 B.C.
  • Sometimes referred to as, “Little Poland,” Port Richmond has an abundance of polish restaurants and grocery stores.

Fishtown

  • The name is derived from the area’s former role as the center of the shad fishing industry on the Delaware River.
  • The world’s first pizza museum can be found in Fishtown, along with this notable bar and biergarten.
